Eastern Carpenter Bee
(Xylocopa virginica)
Size: ¾–1 inch
Characteristics: Large, black, shiny abdomen; resembles a bumble bee
Legs: 6
Antennae: Yes
Habitat:
Carpenter bees bore into untreated or weathered wood such as decks, eaves, and fascia boards. They create tunnels for nesting but do not eat wood. Activity increases in spring.
Threats & Dangers:
Structural damage occurs over time as tunnels expand. Males are aggressive but cannot sting; females rarely sting unless handled. Wood damage can attract other pests.
Control Measures:
Sealing wood surfaces and repairing damage prevents nesting. Professional treatments stop repeat infestations. Early intervention limits structural harm.
