Eastern Subterranean Termite
(Reticulitermes flavipes)
— Most Common
Size: ⅛–¼ inch
Characteristics: Cream-colored to light brown; soft-bodied
Legs: 6
Antennae: Yes
Wings: Yes (swarmers only)
Habitat:
These termites live underground and build mud tubes to access wood above ground. Colonies are commonly found beneath homes, foundations, and crawl spaces. They require moisture to survive.
Threats & Dangers:
They cause severe structural damage by feeding on wood from the inside out. Infestations often go unnoticed for years. Repair costs can be extensive if untreated.
Control Measures:
Professional soil treatments or baiting systems are required to eliminate colonies. DIY methods are ineffective against hidden nests. Annual inspections are critical for prevention.
