Field Ant
(Formica subsericea)
Size: 4–7 mm
Characteristics: Fast-moving, dark brown to black
Legs: 6
Antennae: Yes
Wings: Seasonal
Habitat:
Field ants nest in soil across lawns, gardens, and along foundations. Colonies often expand beneath patios, sidewalks, and landscaping features. Nest activity increases in warm weather.
Threats & Dangers:
While not typically destructive indoors, their nesting can undermine soil and hardscapes. They bite and spray formic acid when disturbed. Large populations reduce outdoor comfort.
Control Measures:
Targeted mound treatments are the most effective solution. Perimeter applications prevent migration toward structures. Regular lawn and soil management help deter nesting.
