Roof Rat
(Rattus rattus)
Size: 6–8 inches (body)
Characteristics: Slender body, pointed nose, large ears, long tail
Habitat:
Roof rats prefer elevated areas like attics, ceilings, roofs, and trees. They enter buildings through roof gaps, vents, or overhanging branches. More common in urban and coastal areas.
Threats & Dangers:
They contaminate food and surfaces and spread disease. Their climbing ability makes infestations hard to detect early. Damage often occurs in hidden areas.
Control Measures:
Exclusion is key—seal rooflines and trim vegetation. Professional trapping programs are most effective. Regular inspections reduce risk.
