Wolf Spider
(Lycosidae family)
Size: 6–13 mm
Characteristics: Large, black ants that tunnel through wood
Legs: 6
Antennae: Yes
Wings: Yes (spring swarmers)
Habitat:
Carpenter ants nest in damp, decaying, or moisture-damaged wood, commonly inside walls, crawl spaces, decks, and attics. They do not eat wood but excavate it to build extensive tunnel systems. Homes with leaks or poor ventilation are especially vulnerable.
Threats & Dangers:
These ants cause serious structural damage over time, often going unnoticed until infestations are well established. Swarming indoors is a strong indicator of an active nest inside the structure. Without treatment, damage can rival that of termites.
Control Measures:
Effective control requires locating and eliminating the main nest, not just the foraging ants. Moisture issues must be corrected to prevent reinfestation. Professional baiting and targeted treatments provide long-term protection.
